The P2 Coalition of Palm Beach County is a voluntary group of local industry, academia, and government representatives with a common interest in preventing pollution to improve the quality of our environment.

About Us

Pollution Prevention (P2) first emerged as the watchword for environmental protection in the work of Dr. Michael Royston 20 years ago. His work advanced the idea that preventing pollution, rather than controlling it or cleaning it up, could provide environmental and economic benefits. By the late 1980s, the prevention concept had attracted EPA policy makers. P2 gained momentum with the passage of the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 where Congress formally established a national policy to prevent or reduce pollution at the source.

Nationally, a series of EPA prevention-specific programs have been launched. EPA Region 4 encouraged state and local agencies to develop P2 strategies in 1994 as an item in their Section 105 grant requirements.

The Air Pollution Control Section of the Palm Beach County Health Department (PBCHD) recognized that to achieve success in Pollution Prevention, the agency had to have support from industry and academia.

The Pollution Prevention Coalition of Palm Beach County began in November 1994. Its founding members included the Solid Waste Authority, Motorola, Pratt and Whitney, Florida Power and Light, Florida Atlantic University, County Facilities Management and the PBCHD. Today the coalition has grown to over 50 members from 2 universities, 5 local and state governments, and over 20 companies. The Coalition continues to have seminars, participate in local events, provide P2 Awards for successful industry implementations, judge a special category at the Science Fair, and have an annual Student Essay Contest.
